I ruined my first major editorial shoot with color temperature. Not gels, not bad ratios, just the fact that I had two light sources on a model’s face that were about 800 Kelvin apart and I had no idea. One was a tungsten practical in the background, one was a strobe key. The images came back with this muddy, indeterminate skin tone that no amount of color grading could salvage. The art director never said anything, but I didn’t get another call from that publication for two years. I still have the lighting journal sketch from that day, marked with a red pen.

That failure taught me something more valuable than the mistake itself: color on set is not an accident you fix in post. It is a decision you make before you trigger the first frame. Gels are where that decision lives.

What a Gel Is Actually Doing to Your Light

A gel is a sheet of polyester or acetate that sits in front of a light source and filters specific wavelengths. That is the simple version. The more useful version is this: a gel is a tool for controlling the emotional and technical relationship between your subject and the environment around them.

There are two categories of gels most working photographers deal with. Correction gels, like CTO (color temperature orange) and CTB (color temperature blue), shift your light source toward tungsten or daylight. Creative gels introduce colors that have no correction purpose. They are there to do something to the viewer. The Rosco and Lee filter systems are industry standards. A full sheet from either runs you roughly two to three dollars. A sample book from Rosco, which gives you every swatch in a four-inch by four-inch cut, costs around fifteen dollars and is the single best lighting investment I have made outside of actual equipment.

The Three-Light Gel Framework I Use for Fashion and Beauty

My go-to starting point for gelled setups is built around contrast and complement. I run a neutral or slightly warm key light, typically a large octabox at about a 45-degree angle to the subject, ungelled or with a quarter CTO. Then I introduce a background light with a gel, usually something in the blue or teal range: Lee 161 (slate) or Rosco 74 (night blue) are both reliable. The third light, a rim or hair light, gets a gel that either matches the background for depth or pulls toward the opposite end of the spectrum for tension.

The ratio I work with most often: key at full power, background at minus one and a half stops, rim at minus two stops. This keeps the subject’s skin reading correctly against a background that reads as colored without competing. If I push the background light up past minus one stop from the key, the gel color starts to wrap onto the subject’s shoulders and cheeks. Sometimes that is exactly what I want. More often it is not.

Gelling Strobes vs. Continuous Lights, and Why It Changes Your Approach

Strobes and continuous lights behave differently with gels, and I want to be direct about this: I almost exclusively use strobes in my studio, so that is where my experience is sharpest. With strobe, you are working blind until you chimp or pull a Polaroid, so your first frame with a new gel combination is diagnostic, not final. Build in time for that.

With continuous lights, particularly LED panels, you can see the color interaction in real time. The tradeoff is that many LEDs already have a gel compatibility issue: their output spectrum has gaps that can make certain gel colors shift unpredictably compared to how they behave over tungsten or strobe. If you are working with LEDs and gels and the color looks off, that is usually why. Test the combination before the subject is in the chair.

The Shoot That Changed How I Think About Skin and Gel Color

A few years ago, I was building a setup for a beauty campaign and my wife walked through the studio while I was testing. She stopped and told me the gel color on the background was making the model’s skin look hollow. I was using a Rosco 389 (chroma green, heavily diffused), and I had pulled it back far enough that I thought it was reading as a neutral dark tone. She was right. The green was hitting the shadow side of the face and pulling the undertone toward gray.

I switched to Lee 139 (primary green, even more saturated but with a warmer yellow component) and repositioned the background light so it was aimed at the seamless behind the subject rather than raking across it. The hollowness disappeared. That conversation cost me about twelve minutes of reset time and saved the entire selects folder.

The lesson: gel color that looks neutral on a gray card does not behave neutrally on skin. Always test with a person in the frame, not just a stand-in object.

Organizing Your Gel Kit So You Actually Use It

I keep my gels in a labeled three-ring binder with acetate sleeves, organized by the Lee and Rosco numbering systems separately. Each sleeve has the swatch name, number, and a small note about what I have used it for. My most-used cuts are stored in a flat tray near each light, labeled with masking tape, the same way I label every modifier and head in my studio. If I have to hunt for a gel mid-setup, I will not reach for it the next time.

Start with a core set: CTO full, CTO half, CTB full, CTB half, a blue-green in the 100-200 range from either system, a red, and a minus green. That is seven gels. They will cover 80 percent of what you will ever need creatively and correct for nearly every mixed-light situation you will encounter on location.

The most important shift in how I think about gels happened when I stopped treating them as a rescue tool for bad light and started treating them as a first decision, planned before the subject arrives. Build the color into the setup, not into the grade.
