I keep a lighting journal. Every shoot gets a sketch: modifier positions, power ratios, distances, and yes, gel colors. I started doing it after a bad experience early in my career where I mixed a 1/2 CTO on my key with an ungelled background light and wondered for three days why my subject’s skin looked like uncooked salmon in every frame. The culprit was obvious in retrospect. At the time, I had no system. Now I have a very precise one.
Gels are where a lot of photographers get sloppy, and I understand why. They feel like decoration. You slap an orange on a hair light, call it “warm,” and move on. But if you’re treating gels as an afterthought, you’re leaving the most controllable creative variable in your studio completely unmanaged.
What’s Actually Happening When You Put a Gel on a Light
A gel is a polycarbonate or polyester filter that absorbs certain wavelengths and transmits others. When you place a 1/2 CTO (color temperature orange) over a strobe, you’re shifting its output roughly from 5500K toward 3800K. That’s not a vibe. That’s physics, and your camera is measuring it.
The practical implication is this: if your white balance is set to 5500K and your key light has a 1/2 CTO, the skin in that zone will read warm. If your background light is ungelled and still firing at 5500K, it will read neutral. Your eye will register the contrast between those two temperatures and interpret it as depth, warmth, or intentional mood. That’s the actual mechanism. Everything creative you do with gels is downstream from understanding that contrast relationship.
Density matters enormously. A full CTO is a dramatic shift. A 1/4 CTO is almost invisible on its own but creates real separation when you’re working with a complementary gel on another source. I use Rosco and LEE almost exclusively. Both publish transmission charts online. Before I put any gel into a setup, I know its stop loss (most gels cost between 1/3 and 2 full stops of light output) and its peak wavelength. That’s not obsessive. That’s how you avoid guessing.
The Three-Light Color Framework I Actually Use
My default starting point for editorial and beauty work is what I’d call a temperature triangle: one warm source, one cool source, one neutral or white fill. The proportions change by job, but the logic is fixed.
Key light: 1/4 CTO on a 47-inch Octa, positioned 45 degrees off axis, about 5 feet from the subject. This gives you flattering warmth without pushing into orange-cast territory. Power depends on ambient, but I’m usually at f/8 ISO 100 with this light doing most of the work.
Hair or rim light: 1/2 CTB (blue) on a gridded strip, powered about 1.5 stops below the key. This keeps the edge separation from competing with the warmth on the face. The blue reads as cool, almost silvery, and it pushes the subject away from the background without a white halo.
Background or fill: ungelled, bounced off a 4x8 white foam core at about 2.5 stops below key. This anchor keeps the image from going fully surreal. It’s the reason the viewer trusts the image even when the lighting is stylized.
From that base, I adjust gel density based on what the brief requires. A beauty shot for a skincare brand wants subtlety: pull the CTO down to 1/8. A fashion editorial with a bold concept might push the key to a full CTO and bring the rim all the way to a deeper blue like Rosco #80.
Where Photographers Get the Colors Wrong
The most common mistake I see is using complementary gels at equal power. Equal power means neither color wins, and you get a muddy middle. Color contrast works the same way tonal contrast does: one element has to dominate.
The second mistake is ignoring gel color on the subject’s clothing. I once shot a beauty campaign where the model wore a cream-colored blouse. My 1/2 CTO on the key was warming her skin beautifully, but it was also turning that blouse a dirty yellow. I caught it in my test shots, pulled the gel back to 1/4 CTO, and recovered the white in the fabric without losing the skin warmth. If I hadn’t been testing gel density systematically from 1/8 up, I would have dialed in the “looks warm” setting and never questioned it.
The third mistake is not accounting for spill. A full CTB on a background light will throw blue spill onto anything within four feet of that backdrop. Grid everything. I run a 40-degree grid on nearly every gelled source in my studio. The grid adds roughly $80 to $150 per head depending on the modifier, and it is not optional equipment in my opinion.
Practical Gel Kit for Under $100
You do not need a full theatrical gel pack to start working with color intentionally. Here’s what I’d buy if I were starting from scratch:
Rosco Strobist Collection ($25 for 20 sheets). This gives you both CTO and CTB in multiple densities, plus a handful of creative colors. Each sheet cuts down to fit most speed rings or can be held in place with a gel clip ($8-12 from most lighting retailers).
A gel clip or two from Westcott or Impact. Do not use tape directly on your modifier. It leaves residue and it will eventually damage the fabric.
One sheet each of Rosco #27 (medium red) and Rosco #80 (primary blue) for the days you want to go full editorial. These are roughly $2 per sheet direct from Rosco’s website.
That’s your starting kit. Everything else is an expansion.
The Single Habit That Changed How I Use Color
Every new gel I buy gets tested in isolation before it goes into a real shoot. I fire it at a gray card, pull the image into Lightroom, and check the actual Kelvin shift under the White Balance eyedropper. That number goes into my phone, into my app, into my journal. I know exactly what each gel does before I ask it to do anything creative.
That calibration habit is the whole game. A gel doesn’t have an opinion. It just transmits what it transmits. Your job is to know that number cold, build your ratios around it, and make the light go exactly where you decided it should go.
