I keep a lighting journal. Every setup from every shoot gets sketched into it, date and all, including the ones I want to forget. There’s an entry from a beauty shoot in 2019 where I tried to use a cyan gel on my background light without accounting for how it would interact with the warm skintones I was building from the key. The images looked like a bad Instagram filter from 2012. The client was polite about it. I was not polite to myself.
That failure cost me a half-day of shooting and a lot of repositioning in post. What it taught me is that gels are not decoration. They are light modifiers with spectral consequences, and if you treat them like colored plastic you slap on when you want something “creative,” they will make your images worse, not better.
Why Color Temperature Is the Real Variable Nobody Talks About Enough
Every light in my studio has its color temperature written on a strip of masking tape on the housing. It sounds obsessive, and it is. But here’s why it matters when you start adding gels.
Strobe lights typically output somewhere between 5000K and 5600K. That’s close to daylight, which is why we use them. When you attach a gel, you are shifting that color temperature either warmer or cooler depending on the gel. A CTO (Color Temperature Orange) gel rated at full stop warms your source to roughly 3200K. A CTB (Color Temperature Blue) pushes it toward 7500K or beyond. These aren’t aesthetic choices first. They are technical ones. If your white balance is set to 5500K and you put a full CTO on your key light without adjusting, your subject’s skin is going to render orange. That might be what you want. It probably isn’t.
The fix is to make a deliberate choice before you fire a single test shot. Decide: am I gelling one light for contrast against a neutral exposure, or am I gelling everything and resetting white balance to match? Both are valid. Mixing them up is where photographers get into trouble.
The Rosco and Lee Catalogs Are Your Starting Point, Not Your Ceiling
Most working photographers reach for the same five or six gels. The quarter CTO for a subtle warmth boost. The Congo Blue (Rosco #59) for a moody background. The Urban Sodium (Lee #952) for that amber streetlight look. These are the reliable hits. But both Rosco and Lee publish full swatch books that you can order for around $15 each, and I’d argue those are among the best $30 you can spend on your lighting education.
Each swatch lists the transmission percentage at various wavelengths. This matters because a gel that looks vivid magenta in the swatch book may transmit only 12% of the light hitting it. That’s nearly a three-stop cut. You need to compensate at the strobe, which means bumping your output on that head to maintain your intended exposure ratio. I run a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio on most of my beauty work. Add a deep gel on the fill or hair light and you need to recalculate the whole balance. A light meter is not optional in this workflow. I use a Sekonic L-858D. It’s expensive, around $500, but the color measurement function alone has saved setups that would otherwise have taken an hour of trial and error.
Building a Background Color Without Blowing Your Foreground
One of the most practical gel applications in commercial studio work is isolating background color from your subject. The method I use consistently is a two or three-stop power difference between the background light and the key light, with the background head set at a steeper downward angle to prevent spill onto the subject.
For a typical beauty setup: key light at f/11, background strobe gelled with Rosco Chroma Blue (#69) set to output f/5.6. The falloff between subject and background creates natural separation, and the gel color reads clearly without contaminating the skin. If I see any color cast on the subject’s shoulder or jaw, I flag the background head with a piece of black foam core before I consider changing power settings. Flagging is faster, it’s free, and it’s precise.
What Complementary Color Theory Actually Does on a Portrait
My wife is a painter. She has spent more hours thinking about how color behaves than most photographers I know, and I absorbed a lot of that without realizing it until I started pulling it back into my lighting setups. One thing she pointed out watching me work one afternoon: I was lighting a subject with a warm key and then adding a warm background gel, and the image felt flat because everything was pulling in the same direction. There was no tension.
Complementary gels, warm key against a cool background or vice versa, create the visual tension that makes a portrait feel dimensional rather than monochromatic. A 1/2 CTO on the key at f/8 paired with a Rosco Surprise Blue (#63) background at f/5.6 gives you that. The proportions matter. The background should not compete with the subject in saturation or brightness. It should anchor and contrast.
Gel Degradation and Why Your Consistency Will Slip If You Ignore It
Gels deteriorate under heat and UV output from strobes. A gel you used six months ago may be transmitting differently than it was when it was new, especially if it’s a deeper color. I replace any gel that shows visible fading or that has been on a hot continuous light for extended periods. Budget roughly $3 to $8 per gel sheet from Rosco or Lee, and keep backups of your most-used colors in a labeled folder in your gear cabinet.
I test every modifier and accessory the day it arrives, including replacement gels. I shoot a gray card under the new gel, compare it against my previous shot with the old version, and note any exposure difference in my lighting journal. Two or three tests over a year will tell you exactly how fast your specific gels are aging under your specific lights.
The single most important thing I can tell you about creative gels is this: treat them as a technical element first and an aesthetic one second, and you will make fewer apologies to clients and fewer notes to yourself in journals you wish you didn’t have to write.
