The Shot That Made Me Take Gels Seriously

I was three hours into a beauty editorial when the creative director leaned over my shoulder and said, “It’s technically perfect and completely boring.” She wasn’t wrong. Every light was dialed in, ratios were clean, skin tones were accurate. And the image looked like a catalog photo for a brand nobody cared about. We ended up throwing a quarter-cut CTO on the hair light and a pale lavender gel on the background, and the next frame we shot was the one that ran as the opener. I’ve kept a lighting journal since 2011 where I sketch every setup from every shoot, and that page has a star next to it. Not because the fix was complicated, but because it was fast and it worked. That afternoon rewired how I think about color in the studio.

What a Gel Actually Does to Your Light

A gel is a sheet of colored polyester film placed in front of a light source. That’s the simple version. What’s actually happening is wavelength filtration: the gel absorbs certain parts of the visible spectrum and transmits others, shifting the color of the light hitting your subject. A full CTO (Color Temperature Orange) converts a 5600K daylight strobe to roughly 3200K tungsten. A quarter CTO makes a subtler push of about 500K. These aren’t aesthetic guesses. They’re measurable, repeatable shifts.

Here’s the part most photographers skip: gels affect exposure. A full saturation gel, say a deep red or a primary blue, can eat between one and two stops of light depending on the density of the sheet. If you’re running your key light at f/8 and you throw a deep blue gel on it without adjusting power, you’re now underexposing. I set every gelled light individually with a Sekonic L-858D after the gel goes on. That adds maybe four minutes to setup and saves the shoot.

Gels also interact with your camera’s white balance setting. If you’re shooting at a fixed 5600K and you put a full CTO on your key, your subject turns orange. If you dial your white balance to match that orange key, your un-gelled background turns blue. That tension is the whole game. You’re not correcting, you’re designing.

The Gels Worth Buying and What They Actually Cost

I keep two sets in my studio. The first is a correction set from Rosco: their Roscolux swatchbook runs about $20 and comes with over 300 samples that are large enough to test on a speedlight or small enough to tape to a snoot. Once I know what I want, I buy full sheets, which run $8 to $12 each from B&H or Adorama. For strobes, I cut them to size and attach them with wooden clothespins, never gaffer tape directly on the gel. Tape leaves residue and warps the color over time.

The second set is the Lee Filters 216 diffusion kit, which I use for softening and color work simultaneously. Lee’s 101 Yellow and 119 Dark Blue are on almost every creative job I do. For anything involving skin, I almost always lean warm, a quarter or half CTO on the key, because cool-shifted skin reads as sick or washed out on camera even when it looks fine to the eye.

For photographers starting out, spend $40 on a Rosco or Lee starter kit and another $20 on a handful of specific sheets you’ll actually use: quarter CTO, half CTO, full blue (182 or 200 series), and one or two pastels. Don’t buy a 100-color party pack. You’ll use six of them and the rest will live in a bin.

A Ratio Framework That Actually Holds Up

My default creative gel setup for a single-subject portrait starts like this: key light ungelled at full power, hair or rim light gelled with a complementary color at half to two-thirds the power of the key. The background light is gelled independently, usually with something that either extends the mood of the rim or pushes contrast against it.

A specific example: for a recent fashion job, I ran the key (a 47-inch Profoto RFi octobox) clean at f/9, a hair light through a grid strip with a Lee 200 (Double CT Blue) gel pulled back to f/5.6, and a background light with a Lee 158 (Deep Orange) gel at f/7.1. The subject’s hair went blue-silver. The background burned warm amber. The skin stayed accurate because the key was white. That’s a triangle of color relationships, and once you see it that way, you can engineer it in about 15 minutes.

The rule I follow: never gel more than two lights with saturated colors unless you have a specific reason. Three strong colors compete. Two colors with a clean key give you control.

When the Wrong Gel Teaches You More Than the Right One

Early in my career I lit a beauty campaign using a heavy green gel on a background light without checking how it would bounce. The set was a small white cyclorama, and the green contaminated everything, including the model’s skin. The client noticed in selects. I didn’t book that agency again for two years.

Now I tape the name of every light and its gel to the stand using masking tape. “BG LEFT - LEE 139 - PRIMARY GREEN.” It looks obsessive. It prevents mistakes. Color contamination from reflective surfaces is one of the most common problems I see in other photographers’ studio work, and it’s almost always invisible during setup because you’re looking at the lights, not the walls.

If you’re working in a painted studio or anywhere with neutral gray or white surfaces, always check for spill with a test shot before your subject steps in. A quick chimp with live histogram review takes 30 seconds and can save a day’s worth of selects.

Build the Habit Before You Need the Skill

Gels are not a rescue tool. They work best when they’re planned, not improvised. The photographers who use color light well are the ones who’ve experimented with it on their own time, on subjects who don’t matter, until the decision-making becomes automatic. Start with one gelled light. Understand what it does to everything else in the frame. Then add another. That’s not caution. That’s how you build a vocabulary you can actually use under pressure.
