There’s a modifier on my studio shelf that has a strip of masking tape on the side with two words written in black marker: “daily driver.” That’s the 75cm octabox, and I’ve been reaching for it more than anything else in my kit for the better part of a decade. The 75cm size sits in a genuinely interesting middle ground. It’s not the sprawling, wrap-everything softness of a 150cm unit, and it’s not the tight, directional quality of a small beauty dish. It’s controlled light that you can still get close enough to a subject to make meaningful. That proximity is everything. Bring a 75cm octabox within two feet of a face and the inverse square law starts working hard for you. The light drops off fast, your background stays largely unaffected, and you get dimensionality in the image without fighting the whole room.

For male portraits and structured beauty work, I return to this modifier constantly. Not because it’s glamorous or expensive, but because it does a very specific thing extremely well. Here’s how to work with it, drawn from Taylor’s tutorial and layered with how I’ve applied it in my own commercial work.


Step 1: Understand What “75cm” Actually Gives You

The 75cm octabox measures roughly 28 to 30 inches across, depending on the manufacturer. That’s large enough to produce genuinely soft light when placed close to a subject, but small enough that it stays manageable on location and doesn’t flood an entire studio interior. Think of it as a light source that rewards deliberate placement rather than ambient generosity. The octagonal shape produces a catch light in the eye that reads as round and natural, which is one reason beauty photographers tend to favor it over rectangular softboxes for close-up work.

Step 2: Mount It and Assess the Light Distribution

What you want to see is even, consistent illumination across the entire face of the softbox, with no hot spots at the center. Taylor demonstrates this clearly in the tutorial, and it’s worth checking every time you use any softbox, not just this one. If your center reads significantly brighter than your edges, your internal diffuser may be missing, damaged, or seated incorrectly.

Step 3: Position It Close to Maximize Light Quality

Position it close to your subject, closer than you think is correct, typically within 18 to 24 inches of the face for portrait work. At that distance, the modifier is physically large relative to the subject’s face, which is what produces soft, wrapping light with gradual shadow transitions. Pull it back to four or five feet and you’ve effectively turned it into a harder light source. Taylor shows the difference on a wall, demonstrating how the light spread tightens and intensifies as the modifier moves closer, and that visual is genuinely instructive.

Step 4: Set Your Angle for Controlled Drama

That placement creates shadow structure across the face, emphasizing jaw definition, cheekbone depth, and brow. It’s not Rembrandt lighting by default, but it’s directional enough to give you form. I typically start at a 45-degree horizontal offset and 30 to 35 degrees above eye level, then adjust by watching the shadow under the nose and the depth of the shadow on the far cheek. Those two areas tell me everything about whether my angle is working.

Step 5: Use It as a Fill Light or Background Wash

Taylor makes the point that a pair of these units aimed at a white seamless can produce a clean, even background exposure without needing dedicated background lights. I’ve used this approach on corporate headshot days when I’m working fast and need to minimize setup time. Set each unit at roughly 45 degrees to the background surface, positioned symmetrically, and you get a smooth gradient falloff from center. As a fill light on the shadow side of a two-light portrait setup, it gives just enough bounce to open shadows without erasing the modeling that your key light established.

Step 6: Evaluate the Diffusion Layers and Skip the Grid

Some manufacturers include attachment points for a third layer, but Taylor’s position, and mine, is that a third diffusion layer is rarely necessary and adds light loss without meaningful benefit. Where I do pay attention is the material quality of both layers. Cheap diffusion fabric can introduce a color cast, usually slightly warm or green, that’s subtle enough to survive a casual white balance check but shows up on skin tones under a calibrated eye. When I test a new modifier, I shoot a color checker card through it and compare it to my reference exposure. I learned that lesson the hard way early in my career, and I haven’t skipped that step since.


What I’d Add From My Own Practice

The 75cm octabox is one of the few modifiers where brand quality actually shifts the experience in a meaningful way. Premium units from established manufacturers run around $250, while independent brands can come in under $100. The price difference shows up in three places: the quality and reflectivity of the interior silver material, the durability of the speed ring connection, and how many assembly-disassembly cycles the rods and elastic fittings can handle before they start to fail. For studio-only use, a mid-range modifier can serve you well for years. If you’re collapsing and rebuilding it for location work regularly, the cheaper build quality will reveal itself faster than you’d like.

I also use this modifier specifically when I want light that stays off the background. Placed at a 90-degree angle to my subject and positioned close, the light from a 75cm octabox barely grazes the backdrop. That control over spill is something I don’t get from larger modifiers without adding flags and gobos to the setup.

The single most important thing this tutorial clarifies is that the 75cm octabox is not a compromise between large and small. It’s a tool with specific strengths: proximity-driven softness, controlled spill, and versatility across key, fill, and background roles.
